Tim Smith

Tim is an Executive specialising in advising businesses from developed markets - from MNCs to SMEs - on their IP strategy and new ventures in China. Based in the UK, Tim divides his time between Rouse's London and Beijing offices.

Tim supports his clients with the creation and maintenance of their competitive advantage through the creation, enforcement and commercialisation of their IP assets, in the constantly changing Chinese environment. Tim's clients include major brand, technology and content companies, whom he helps navigate the legal, commercial, regulatory and cultural challenges that China presents.

From 2010 until the beginning of 2016, Tim headed the firm's Beijing office, and was deputy head of the China dispute resolution team. He was also vice-chair of the EU China Chamber of Commerce's IP Working Group in Beijing advancing the interests of European business in dialogue with the Chinese Government.

Before joining Rouse at the end of 2008, Tim was Senior Legal Adviser at IFPI, the international trade body for the recording industry. At IFPI he was responsible for a number of high-profile litigation cases, including the ground breaking action for the industry against Yahoo! China and Baidu. He has managed litigation in more than 20 jurisdictions in Asia, Europe and South America.

Tim trained at Ashurst in London, and spent six years in the IP team where he handled IP advisory, transactional and enforcement work covering the full range of IP rights.
