Mary has a scientific background and her early career was devoted to pharmaceutical research.
Between 2004 and 2006, she was the Technical Director for a leading pharmaceutical company and in this role she acted as in-house counsel prior to having a legal qualification. She instructed external lawyers on a number of issues and was closely involved in a reference to the ECJ regarding data exclusivity, attending the court hearing in Luxembourg. She liaised with the patent department, the business, and the external lawyers in the UK, and was part of the global legal group.
While working in the Pharmaceutical Industry she studied for a Law degree part-time with the Open University. After graduating, she started the LPC and during the first year of the course obtained a training contract with a leading London IP law firm. She qualified with the same firm into IP in March 2009 and has worked on patent litigation, advised on design rights and regulatory issues in the Life Sciences sector. She also has experience of drafting material transfer agreements, clinical trial agreements and licences.

Mary plays golf regularly and represents her club, Willingdon Golf Club, in Sussex County Competitions. She enjoys walking and cycling in the South Downs near to where she lives.
